Children's Ads Show Lots of Junk Food

WASHINGTON (AP) -- In a child's buffet of food commercials, more than 40 percent of the dishes are candy, snacks and fast food. Nowhere to be found: fresh fruit, vegetables, poultry or seafood, according to the largest-ever study of commercials aimed at children.

Where are the Veggies?

In a poll of 959 boys and girls, aged 9 and 13 years old, the Nemours Foundation reported that:

  • 26% of kids said they had veggies three times or more.
  • 16% said they had vegetables twice.
  • 25% said they had one serving of a vegetable.
  • 33% said they had none.

How 'bout Them Apples?

A nutritious lunch program turned Central Alternative High School in Appleton, WI from one of state's worst schools into one of its best. Starting in 1997, simple changes to the school lunch menu, which replaced burgers, fries burritos and other junk food with whole grain breads, salads, fruits, vegetables and "good old fashioned recipes," yielded an astonishing drop in the number of drop-outs, student expulsions and student drug use. Significant decreases were also reported in students carrying weapons and committing suicide.

Not Sweet at All!

The Mayo Clinic strongly advises that honey should never be given to an infant, as it may contain the bacteria that cause botulism. An infant's immune system is not fully developed to fight off this disease.
